About us

Relational, strengths-based and participatory practice is at the heart of what we do

Soulgen is a boutique consultancy creating bespoke, participatory experiences that help people, organisations and communities discover strengths, connect differently, build social capital and turn ideas into shared action and impact.

We work across youth and community development, place-based practice, facilitation, capacity building and experiential learning – drawing on Asset-Based Community Development, co-design, storytelling, creativity and other participatory approaches.

Rather than doing things to or for people, we work alongside them – recognising the knowledge, strengths and assets already present and creating the conditions for people to connect, contribute, lead and create change together.

Our pillars

Since 2015, Soulgen has been rewriting the handbook on youth and community development. We don’t follow a strict formula – we co-design creative workshops and experiences that engage, inspire, and uplift people, places, and organisations.

Empathy

We listen deeply and create spaces where people feel seen, heard and valued. We approach people and communities with curiosity, care and respect, recognising lived experience and relationships as essential foundations for meaningful change.

Sustainability

We look beyond one-off activities towards lasting capability, relationships and local ownership. Our work strengthens people, organisations and communities to build on what they already have and continue creating change long after our involvement ends.

Co-creation

We believe better ideas and stronger outcomes emerge when people help shape what affects them. We bring diverse people together to imagine, experiment, design and act — turning individual strengths and perspectives into shared possibilities and collective action

Our story

Soulgen grew from a simple belief: young people and communities already hold extraordinary strengths, knowledge, creativity and potential – and meaningful change happens when we create the conditions for these to come alive.

Founded by Dimitrios Papalexis, Soulgen has evolved through more than a decade of work alongside young people, communities and organisations in Australia and internationally. Dimitrios’ background across community development, counselling, facilitation and experiential practice – together with the many young people, communities, colleagues, teachers and collaborators who have shaped the journey – continues to influence how we work today.\Soulgen grew from a simple belief: young people and communities already hold extraordinary strengths, knowledge, creativity and potential – and meaningful change happens when we create the conditions for these to come alive.

We collaborate with local and state governments, community organisations, universities, foundations, peak bodies and purpose-driven organisations across diverse communities and places.

Today, our work comes to life across four interconnected areas: Youth & Change, People & Place, Practice & Possibility, and Experience & Becoming.

Different contexts. Different people. Different possibilities. But the philosophy remains the same: start with strengths, invest in relationships, work alongside people and create the conditions for meaningful action and lasting change..

Cooks River Changemaker Program

“I’ve had a very enriching experience co-designing a workshop for widening student participation with Dimitrios. He brings to the table not only his broad experience working with communities and youth development, but also a deep understanding of various frameworks and methodologies for fostering inclusivity in diverse and challenging contexts.”
